For those of us with Nexus 4 devices that would like to use the great Energizer Qi 3 Position Inductive Charger but can’t because of the slippery surface that our phone slides off of, there is now a cheap mod to get things working. Magnets and rubber.
- 1 package of 3/4″ x 1.3cm strong magnets from your local craft store ( ~ $2)
- Rubber kitchen drawer liner. We chose a more expensive brand due to the solid textured black look we were going for. ( ~ $6)
Step 1: Remove all screws
On the back plate are 17 screws. Remove all 17, and the back panel will pop off in the back, and slide towards the front.
Step 2: Insert magnets
Insert four magnets, stacked in twos, just above the charging plate. Unfortunately the placement of the ground on the right side will only allow you to add magnets to the left charging plate.
Step 3: Secure magnets
Use electrical tape to secure the magnets in place. Place a few strips of electrical tape across the back of the magnets so that the thickness is sufficient to touch the bottom cover. This will hold the magnets in place over time.
Step 4: Reassemble
Reassemble the device. At this point, the magnets will hold the Nexus 4 in place, but a slight bump will dislodge it.
Step 5: Trim rubber to size
Cut a piece of shelf liner that fits inside the silver rim of the charger. Place on the charger and use a book placed on top over time to flatten the rubber if it curls.
Step 6: Enjoy
At this point, the Nexus 4 will not budge while charging.
